7 Tips to Pass a Permit Exam on the First Try

May 15, 2025

Let’s face it—prepping for your learner’s permit test can feel like a lot. With all the traffic laws, road signs, and test anxiety, it’s easy to second-guess yourself. But here’s the good news: With the right approach (and a little help from American Safety Institute), you can walk into that test with confidence and walk out with your permit in hand.

Here are the top tips for a permit test to help you study smarter (not harder) and ultimately pass your exam on the first try.

1. Know What’s on the Test

Every state’s permit exam is different, but they all cover the same basics:

  • Road signs and what they mean
  • Traffic laws and safety rules
  • Driving responsibilities (like what to do in an accident)

Before you do anything else, pick up a copy of your state’s driver’s handbook and start studying. Want a little more structure than that? Take a permit prep class!

2. Take Advantage of Practice Tests

One of the best ways to get ready for the real exam is to take a practice permit test. You can usually find them online or along with a permit prep class. American Safety Institute’s online courses include practice exams designed to mimic the actual test in format and difficulty.

Taking practice tests helps you get used to the wording, timing, and types of questions you’re likely to see. Plus, you’ll find out which areas you need to brush up on.

PRO TIP: Take multiple practice tests. Keep going until you consistently score 90% or higher. That way, you’ll walk into the DMV knowing you’ve got this.

3. Break Up Your Study Sessions

Cramming the night before might work for spelling bees, but it’s not the best way to learn safe driving skills. Instead, give yourself a few weeks to study in short, focused sessions.

Try breaking the material into chunks:

  • One day for signs and signals
  • Another day for rules of the road
  • Another for right-of-way scenarios, etc.

This kind of spacing helps with memory retention. And it’s way less stressful.

4. Don’t Just Memorize, Understand

You might be tempted to memorize answers from practice tests and call it a day, but remember, your goal is to do more than pass. You want to become a safe, confident driver.

If a question trips you up, take a moment to read up on why the right answer is correct. It helps you really comprehend the behavior you’re expected to have on the road, which will make the right answers easier to remember, but also make it easier to do the right thing when the situation actually arises on the road. This is why American Safety Institute’s online permit prep explains the logic behind traffic laws in plain English, so you’re not just learning to pass—you’re learning for the road.

5. Use Flashcards for Quick Review

Flashcards are an old-school tool, but they still work wonders. Whether you practice with paper cards or a digital app, quickly quiz yourself on signs, speed limits, and penalties. Carry the cards (or app) around with you and just weave these moments into your day. You might be surprised how much it can help.

PRO TIP: Make your own deck as you go through the handbook or course. It’ll reinforce the material as you read it and give you an easy way to quiz yourself (or let someone else quiz you).

6. Take Care of Yourself Before Test Day

Test anxiety is real, but it’s manageable.

  • Get a good night’s sleep the night before
  • Eat something the morning of the test (nothing too heavy!)
  • Arrive early with all required documents

Take a few deep breaths before you begin. If you’ve studied consistently and taken practice tests, you’re more prepared than you think.

7. Know Where to Find Help
