Frequently Asked Questions
Is this course approved by the State of New York?
Yes. Our New York Point and Insurance Reduction Program (PIRP) is officially approved by the New York State DMV. When you complete the course, you qualify for a 10% reduction on your auto insurance for three years and can reduce up to four points on your driving record. This course is also accepted by the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) for licensing requirements.
How many points can I reduce with this course?
You may be able to reduce up to four points, but the exact reduction depends on the points you are eligible to have removed. Even though the violations stay on your record, lowering your total points helps reduce penalties and protect your license.
Is the insurance discount guaranteed?
Yes. Every driver who completes this DMV-approved PIRP course earns up to a 10% insurance reduction. Your discount is valid for three years.
How long is the course?
The state requires it to be six hours long. You don’t have to complete all six hours at once. You can log in and out as often as you like, and your progress will be saved. You just need to finish within 30 days of registering.
What will I learn in this course?
The course is divided into eight chapters. Topics include:
- New York traffic laws
- Alcohol and drug-impaired driving
- Defensive driving techniques
- Vehicle maintenance and safety checks
- Handling emergencies on the road
- Hazard awareness
- Sharing the road safely with other drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists
- Responsibilities of being a licensed driver
Is there a final exam?
No. Once you complete the chapter quizzes, you’re finished.
How do quizzes work?
At the end of each chapter you’ll answer a short quiz. You need a 75% or better to move forward. If you don’t pass the first time, you can retake each quiz up to three times.
Can I fail the course?
There are quizzes at the end of each chapter, and you must pass the quizzes throughout the course. If you answer at least 75% of the quiz questions correctly across the course, you will not be required to take a final exam. If you do not meet the 75% quiz requirement, you will be given a second attempt by taking a final exam. The course can be failed if both the quizzes and the final exam are not passed.
How quickly is my completion reported to the DMV?
We electronically report completions directly to the DMV.
Will my insurance company automatically know I finished?
You’ll receive a certificate of completion that you can submit to your insurance company. While the DMV records your completion, it’s your responsibility to provide proof to your insurer for the discount.
How often can I take this course?
For point reduction, you can take it once every 18 months. For insurance discounts, you can take it once every three years to keep your lower rate.
If more than one person is on my policy, does everyone get the discount?
Usually, only the driver who completes the course qualifies. Check with your insurance provider to confirm their rules.
Why are there timers in the course?
State law requires all PIRP courses to span six hours. Timers make sure every student meets this requirement.
Do I have to finish in one sitting?
No. You can stop and start as often as you like. Just complete the course within 30 days of registering.
What happens if I don’t finish on time?
If you don’t complete the course in 30 days, your registration will expire. You’ll need to start over.
Can I take the course on my phone or tablet?
Yes. The course works on computers, smartphones, and tablets, and your progress is saved across devices.
What if I lose my certificate?
If you lose your certificate, a $10 replacement fee applies regardless of how long it has been since course completion. If you never received your certificate in the first place, we will issue a replacement at no charge.
Is this course the same as the classroom version?
Yes. Both formats are DMV-approved. The online option just lets you study at your own pace from anywhere.
What is the driver violation point system in New York?
The DMV assigns points for violations to track risky driving. Too many points in a short period can lead to license suspension. Examples include:
- Speeding 1–10 mph over the limit: 3 points
- Following too closely: 4 points
- Reckless driving: 5 points
Can this course dismiss a traffic ticket?
No. This course is not approved for ticket dismissal. If you get a ticket, you must respond within 15 days by pleading guilty or not guilty following the instructions on the ticket.
