What is the difference between DETS and TLSAE?
Florida now uses two different first-time driver education courses depending on your age.
- TLSAE (Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education) is a 4-hour course that every first-time driver who is 18 or older must complete before applying for a license. There are no alternatives for adults.
- DETS (Driver Education Traffic Safety) is a 6-hour course that became mandatory on July 1, 2025 for all first-time drivers who are under 18. DETS includes more in-depth training on defensive driving, hazards, and teen-specific risk factors, and it has a required final exam.
If you are under 18, you must complete the DETS course.
If you are 18 or older, you must complete the TLSAE course.
