What are the benefits of the New York 5-Hour Online Pre-Licensing Course online course?
Our New York 5-Hour Online Pre-Licensing Course gives new drivers the skills and knowledge they need to be safe and responsible drivers. Taking the course online is the most convenient way to fulfill NY state requirements for first time drivers to schedule their road test at the DMV. When you choose our online course, you can work at your own pace on any device (phone, tablet, computer). You also won’t have to print or mail any documents because your results are reported electronically to the state.
What makes students want to sign up for this course?
The 5-hour course maximizes animations that keep students engaged and motivated. The self-paced format gives students better control of their time. The pricing is affordable, too, so you can get started right away. There is no final exam, so there is no need to stress. Our software allows students to work at their own pace by pausing and saving their progress for later. You don’t have to sit down for 5 hours straight to take this course!
What proof of completion do students get from the course?
Usually, within 48 hours of passing the course, completion information will be electronically reported to the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. This course must be completed within 30 days from the date of registration, if it’s not completed within 30 days students will be required to start the course over and may be required to pay again.
Who is required to take the New York 5-Hour Pre-Licensing Course?
The course is required for anyone 18 years of age or older who is applying for a full New York driver’s license. To enroll, you must hold a valid Class D New York learner permit with a photo. Please note that this course does not apply to individuals applying for a junior license. Completing the 5-hour course is a mandatory step before you can schedule your road test with the New York DMV.
Is this course approved by the New York DMV?
Yes. American Safety Institute is a state-licensed Online Pre-Licensing (OPL) provider, and this course is officially approved by the New York DMV. You’ll receive the exact curriculum required by New York law — just in a more convenient format than a traditional classroom.
How much does the course cost? Are there any hidden fees?
The course costs one flat fee of $49.95 with no hidden fees and no surprise add-ons at checkout. Your registration includes full access to the course and customer support.
How long does it take to complete the course?
The course provides a minimum of 5 hours of instruction, and built-in unit timers ensure it cannot be completed in less time. The good news is you don’t have to finish it all in one sitting. Our system automatically saves your progress, so you can log in and out as many times as you need. Just keep in mind that the course must be completed within 30 days of registration, or you’ll be required to start over.
Can I take the course on my phone?
Yes! The entire course works on any device — phone, tablet, or computer. It’s 100% online and mobile-friendly, so you can complete it from home, on your lunch break, or anywhere else that fits your schedule.
Is the course available in Spanish?
Yes! The New York 5-Hour Online Pre-Licensing Course is available in both English and Spanish. Simply choose the Spanish registration option (“Registrarse en Español”) when you sign up.
Is there a final exam?
No! There is no final exam at the end of this course. Instead, you’ll answer short quiz questions at the end of each learning module and must score 70% or higher to move on to the next section. This approach keeps the pressure low while making sure you’re retaining the material as you go.
Can someone help me with the course?
No. Per New York State requirements, students must complete the entire course on their own without assistance. This ensures every new driver actually gains the knowledge needed to drive safely and pass their road test with confidence.
What happens if I don't finish within 30 days?
The course must be completed within 30 days from your date of registration. If it’s not completed within that window, you’ll be required to start the course over from the beginning. We recommend setting aside time early so you can finish comfortably within the deadline.
What happens after I finish the course?
Once you pass, your completion is reported electronically to the New York State DMV, usually within 48 hours. Your MV-278 certificate is sent immediately upon completion — no printing, mailing, or trips to a driving school required. Once your completion is on file, you’re eligible to schedule your road test appointment.
How do I schedule my road test after completing the course?
Once your course completion is on file with the DMV, you can schedule your road test appointment using the DMV’s Road Test Scheduling System online or by telephone at 1-518-402-2100. You’ll need the 9-digit ID number shown on the front of your NYS learner permit and the ZIP code of the area where you want to take your test. The scheduling system offers the earliest available dates near you — usually within 3 to 5 weeks, though during peak periods like summer and school breaks it may be up to 10 weeks out. Our advice: schedule early!
How long is my course completion valid?
You must take your road test within one year of completing the pre-licensing course. If more than a year passes before you take (and pass) your road test, you’ll need to complete the course again — so don’t wait too long to book your appointment.
Do I need practice driving hours before the road test?
If you’re 18 or older, New York doesn’t require a set number of supervised practice hours — but the DMV strongly recommends getting plenty of practice before test day. Remember that permit holders of all ages must be accompanied by a supervising driver age 21 or older with a valid license whenever they practice. The more comfortable you are behind the wheel, the better your odds of passing on the first try.
What do I need to bring to my road test?
On test day, the NY DMV requires you to bring: your valid NYS photo learner permit (a physical document — Mobile ID is not accepted), a vehicle with valid registration, insurance, and inspection that operates properly and is in clean condition, and a licensed driver — over 18 if they’re driving you to the test site, or over 21 if you’re the one driving there. No other passengers are allowed. Because you took the course online, your completion is reported to the DMV electronically, so there’s no paper certificate to hand over.
What happens if I fail my road test? Do I have to pay again?
Don’t panic — the application fee you paid when you obtained your learner permit includes two road tests. If you don’t pass on your second attempt, you’ll need to pay a fee for additional tests. The good news: your 5-hour course completion stays valid, so you won’t need to retake the course to reschedule (as long as you’re within your one-year window).
How do I get my road test results and my license?
After the road test, the examiner will give you instructions for viewing your results online — they’re posted after 6 p.m. on the day of your test. If you pass, an interim license that allows you to drive will be available to you online, and your photo driver license will arrive in the mail in about 2 weeks. Keep your interim license with your photo learner permit until the real one arrives.
