**TLSAE (Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education)** is a 4-hour course that every first-time driver who is **18 or older** must complete before applying for a license. There are no alternatives for adults.




**DETS (Driver Education Traffic Safety)** is a 6-hour course that became mandatory on **July 1, 2025** for all first-time drivers who are **under 18**. DETS includes more in-depth training on defensive driving, hazards, and teen-specific risk factors, and it has a required final exam.




If you are under 18, you must complete the DETS course.


If you are 18 or older, you must complete the TLSAE course.
